DRUMBEATER AUGUST 2014
ALOHA, We have nearly all returned from our overseas adventures except for 2 paddlers (and friends) still enjoying the sights of Canada and the good ole USA. We had a great time in Hawaii and did really well making it to the Semi finals. We managed to get 5 races in.Pearl Dragons only got 2 races. It was do or die each race to proceed. Melanie would have had a fit. No water closures, just keep paddling with paddle boards, boats, canoes and even swimmers!! I think we paddled 500metres in one race instead of 200 by trying to avoid a swimmer!!Our international paddlers did us proud too. Where to next.???We have been invited to Vancouver in 2 years time. Hopefully Jennifer will remember it next time and even manage to sweep. We did all enjoy Honolulu. Anyone for Mai Tais???? JUNIORS. For those who don’t know both Shaun and Sam have made it into the Australian Auroras. And onto Canada next year, all things going well. So they have to paddle hard, lots of training and no injuries!!! We will be fundraising for them. Tara is trying out as well in the Youth team. Good luck gorgeous girl. VOX BOX WIRED FOR SOUND Thanks to the proceeds of a Holiday Coast Credit Union community grant the Manning River Dragons are now wired for sound. Our club is lucky enough to have been approved for a $1,071.00 community grant to purchase a Cox Vox for our boat. Sweeps and coaches will no longer have to scream calls of safety, encouragement and instruction to our members to be heard. The cox box is a sound system worn by the coach or sweep to communicate to crew with sound coming from speakers covering length of boat. Manning river is very fortunate to be supported by our Community Credit Union with whom we have banked with over the last 6 years. Holiday Coast Credit Union has funded our gazebos, 22 life jackets and our new cox box. We gratefully acknowledge their support of our club. BOAT MAINTENANCE This Sat 30th August after paddling. OLD BOATHOUSE We have been asked by the Council if we wished to share this facility with the Wood Turners. We have had several members go down and have a look but it is deemed unsuitable by all members.(difficult access to get into boats, out of boats, getting boat onto trailer. REGATTAS. It is extremely sad that we have not been able to get a team together for Port Macquarie, Mylstrom regattas. Both Cathy Stenchion and Gaye McDonald volunteered at Port and Jennifer Schubert is volunteering at Ballina this weekend. Just remember there is always a team that is looking for paddlers to join them. Volunteering is fun as well. Our next Regatta is Newcastle. This is a Non sanctioned regatta so you will have the opportunity to paddle in many events. Put your name down for the Sunday(the Sat turn race was not that good). MANNING IN MOTION. A meeting was held in Taree to join all the sporting events together in the last 2 weeks of Jan 2015. Our regatta falls into this. We will get great publicity. We will be having a Come and Try day on the Sat arvo after our turn race and our sporting regatta on the Sunday. Jennifer Schubert will be our contact. SYMPATHY. It is with a saddened voice that I let you all know that Natalie Raab(ex club member) was suddenly killed in a motor bike accident. Shane and Tara Manahan-Dad and Grandfather passed away. Cards have been sent and we did a Paddle Tapp for them both. Our thoughts are with you and your families. ANNUAL AGM DBNSW. Both Jennifer and Trish went and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
