DB DRUMMessage from DBNSW Board
Happy New Year and welcome back to all our members and friends. We certainly hope that everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break, even if it was just for a few days to enjoy the holidays.

On the 6th December DBNSW celebrated our 20th Anniversary overlooking gorgeous Sydney harbour from Luna Park. It was a great joy to have so many paddlers and supporters from across the years join us. The team from the office did an amazing job to get 20 years of photographs and other Dragon-Boat paraphernalia pulled together into a visual timeline for us to display at the event, there was certainly some eye opening photo’s in there! The event was well attended with executives present from Dept of Sport Rec and local MP’s joining paddlers, committee members and long term supporters.
It was indeed a special day, topped off with cake which was cut by 6 DBNSW Presidents from across the years. DBNSW was also very blessed to receive a lovely gift from the team at Wholesale Trophies to mark the milestone which we now proudly display in the office. Thank you to all who attended, it was wonderful to share the day with your presence.

The last Regatta of the season was a pristine day at SIRC, we couldn’t have asked for better weather and the day ran smoother than ever. One of the greatest regatta’s of the season, with a thrilling set of finals. Congratulations to all involved.

The Board continued to work on our new Strategic Priorities and Plan. We spent a fair bit of time locked away in the city going through the results of our consultation on the structure of DBNSW. Following that after the Christmas break we met again and finalised the Strategic Priorities and their objectives in time for the January Strategic Forum. We presented on this in some detail at the forum and will now progress into the detailed tasks and actions to achieve these targets. Across both December and January board meetings we also spent some time working through the revision and update of some of our Handbooks, policies and guidelines. As each becomes complete they are released to the website so please make sure your club is across the most recent versions, even more so if your policies refer to undertaking the State Body versions.

At the strategic forum, we also discussed some of our plans around a review of Regatta Planning and Operations, which includes a review of volunteers, and introducing Go / No Go decisions several days before based on whether we can safely proceed to run an event, ( as opposed to begging, borrowing and then working people to bone to make it happen). We also discussed some planned motions for constitutional changes which will be put forward for members to vote on at this year’s Annual General Meeting.
Finally we advised members that we are about to conduct an audit of club membership numbers to ensure alignment and compliance with our constitution in regards to validation of membership to DBNSW. We equally encourage clubs to do their own reviews against their constitutional requirements to make sure that you are not breaching your duties under relevant regulations. For more information the slides from the forum will be made available on the website and we are happy to further discuss – just organise a time with any of the board members to do so.
Never a dull moment and loads going on

Maintaining a respectful sporting environment

Our Dragon Boating Fraternity are a very passionate group of people, place a bunch of us together in a competitive environment and there are times when sparks fly.  Please be reminded that when you are undertaking the sport of Dragon-Boat you are representing not only yourself, but your club and your state, not to mention the sport as  whole. When at a regatta, there is a lot of people around, and that includes often children, juniors, youth and family members of all ages. When you are conferring with a paddler, official, volunteer or supporter, please maintain respect at all times for that person, and maintain the same decorum that would be expected of yourself in a professional environment or with your family and friends. In other words, act appropriately. Your fellow paddlers come from all walks of life, are often volunteers and everyone deserves a dignified sporting experience. Paddle hard, paddle safe and paddle with respect.

How and when to contact Board Members

It has been raised on a number of occasions that clubs who might want to speak to the Board, or a board member are unsure of how to make contact.  A number of Club and Member matters can be addressed by the useful information made available across the website. If you are having trouble navigating to find this or need assistance then the office is happy to help.
Most club and member matters regarding general operations and administration are to be addressed to the office in the first instance where they will be responded to by either Mal, Linda or Mel. If your matter is regarding the State Campaign, then it should be addressed to your Coach or Team manager. If your matter is regarding Juniors and Junior development then it should be addressed to the Junior Committee. If your matter is regarding Sweeping, Sweep accreditation and Sweep development then please address your local Sweep Coordinator.
For regional clubs, please utilise your regional co-ordinator who can take your matters to the board for consideration via their monthly board report. When submitting a request to the board please be specific and include working examples of your matter and your required outcomes.
If you require the board to make a decision on a matter, then please put forward a case for the motion, and the motion itself to the board via your co-ordinator / or COO for inclusion in the board papers.

If your matter requires escalation or you are seeking specific information about the work of the board then you are of course welcome to contact the relevant board director.

Greater Sydney RegionMembers of the Port Hacking Dragon Boat Club traveled to Nowra on 10thJanuary to compete in the Nowra Regatta on the Shoalhaven River.
Prior to proceeding, the Club received a request from a U K Paddler, Vaughn Collins (visiting his 3 children in Sydney) to have a paddle with a Sydney Dragon Boat Club whilst in Australia. Vaughn paddles with the Kingston Club on the Thames when at home and so Port Hacking made him a temporary Honorary Member so as he could experience paddling on the beautiful Shoalhaven River.
Port Hacking was successful in gaining places in both the Grand Masters mixed and the Masters Open event and this enabled Vaughn to receive 2 medals to record his stay in Sydney and make his children extremely proud of his achievement with us. Vaughn thanked the Port Hacking members for their hospitality and he thoroughly enjoyed his short stay with the Club.
The Port Hacking Club is now training hard for their next race meeting at the Chinese New Year of the Goat to be held in Darling Harbour on 28th February which is a highly publicised event on the NSW Dragon Boat racing calendar.

Prime TV journalist Michael Hammond and his camera man were having so much fun they were reluctant to leave making them very late for their next assignment.
The summer holiday training program for juniors has proven popular with a few newcomers being warmly welcomed by the more experienced James Sheahan High students.

The Manning regatta has received a lot of publicity around the north with local news broadcasters picking up stories of their regatta. A big well done to the Taree team for their promotion of Dragon Boating in the wider Manning and our region. The Regatta should be fun, see you all there this weekend! If anyone is heading North after the regatta on Sunday, and can tow two boats back to Port Macquarie please let me know on 0412 973 807.

REMINDER #2: Post Capsize Head Count Procedure
Sweeps, Coaches, Paddlers and Club Committees ... Please ask yourselves these questions.
  • Are you aware of the (revised) “Post-Capsize Head Count” procedure?
  • Have you read the DBNSW Sweep Accreditation and Safety Regulations (SASR) v4.0?
  • Have you (& other club sweeps) modified the capsize drill explanation you give to new paddlers?
  • Do your current club sweeps, instructors and paddlers know the procedure has changed?
  • Has your club practised the revised procedure (on land) to demonstrate the process?

Congratulations to Rob Turnbull
